11th AISU Conference “Beyond the Gaze”: University of Ferrara

Panel 3.7 “Cities within cities. Merchants and urban space between integration and marginalization (11th-17th Centuries)”

The 11th conference of the Italian Association of Urban History (AISU), “Beyond the Gaze. Interpreting and understanding the city”, is taking place in Ferrara in a few days (13-16 September 2023). Both the team of MICOLL and of IUSTITIAM are involved as panel 3.7 “Cities within cities. Merchants and urban space between integration and marginalization (11th-17th centuries)” is going to be coordinated by Jake Dyble (MICOLL), Chiara Lo Giudice (IUSTITIAM) and Stefania Gialdroni (MICOLL & IUSTITIAM). 7 legal historians have accepted the challenge to describe the role of merchants in the development of the cities landscapes across the centuries. The session will take place on Thursday 14 September 2023 at Palazzo Tassoni (Ferrara) at 9:30. The first part of the session will be devoted to Italy: Siena (Mario Ascheri , former professor at the universities of Sassari, Siena, and RomaTre), Bologna (Alessia Legnani Annichini, University of Bologna), Genoa (Roberta Braccia, University of Genoa), Bolzano (Stefania Gialdroni, Jake Dyble, and Chiara Lo Giudice, University of Padua). Otherwise, the second part will deal with “the rest of the world”: Bordeaux (Victor Le Breton-Blon, University of Bretagne Sud), cities of the “Levant” (Gilles Hebben, University of Lille), and finally Suzhou, Hangzhou, and Shanghai (Héléne Hu, University of Lille).
