About the Book:

Francesca Fusco, Il Dizionario del linguaggio italiano storico ed amministrativo di Giulio Rezasco, Firenze: Accademia della Crusca, 2023.

The “Dizionario del linguaggio italiano storico ed amministrativo” (Florence, 1881) by Giulio Rezasco (La Spezia, 1813 – Bogliasco, 1894) remains to this day the only existing dictionary of Italian legal-administrative language, a point of reference for historical studies on the lexicon of law.
In this volume, after a presentation of the author and a reconstruction of the genesis of the work, the dictionary is analysed from a linguistic and lexicographical point of view, starting with the structure of the entries and ending with the sources used by Rezasco. Finally, in order to contextualise the Dictionary in the copious contemporary lexicographic production on the language of the law, the presence, in the book, of the new 19th-century legal-bureaucratic terminology is examined, with attention to neologisms, neoformations and semantic changes.
